Filtersysteme. Formationen des Sammelns (Filtering Systems. Formations of Collecting) complements the permanent exhibition at the Museum of Pre- and Ancient History in Weimar, Thuringia with five additional display cabinets. The groups of objects that are placed in these added cabinets constitute collections in a broad variety of contexts, ranging from souvenirs and collectables to preserved food and scientific samples. Differing principles of value and time underlie the various samples, yet, it appears that the efficacy of some sort of filter is a common feature of all of them.
Permeating the chronologically organized collection of archeological samples, the added exhibits challenge the conventions of archaeology and the narratives of human evolution deriving from it. The cultural technique of collecting archaeological artifacts, of categorizing, valuating and sequencing anthropogenic objects, is but one of many types of filtering system that can be deployed to process matter and make meaning of humanity’s entanglement with it.

Filtersysteme. Formationen des Sammelns ergänzt die Dauerausstellung des Archäologischen Museums Thüringen um fünf Vitrinen. In diesen zusätzlichen Vitrinen sind Objekte gruppiert, die in unterschiedlichen Kontexten als Sammlungen bezeichnet werden: Souvenirs und Sammlerstücke, Lebensmittelkonserven und wissenschaftliche Materialproben. Unterschiedliche Wert- und Zeitvorstellungen liegen den Beispielen zugrunde. Und doch scheint allen hier illustrierten Formen des Sammelns das Wirksamwerden einer Art Filter gemeinsam zu sein.
Die hinzugefügten Exponate befragen die chronologisch sortierte Sammlung der archäologischen Ausstellungsstücke des Museums in Hinblick auf archäologische Konventionen und die Narrative der Menschheitsentwicklung, die aus diesen hervorgehen. Die Kulturtechnik des Sammelns archäologischer Artefakte, des Kategorisierens, Bewertens und Anordnens anthropogener Objekte, ist nur eines von vielen Filtersystemen, die eingesetzt werden können, um Materie aufzubereiten und in ihr die Verflechtungen der Menschheit mit dieser lesbar zu machen.
